Montag, 10.11.2008: Normal approximation in geometrical and combinatorial probability

Prof. Mathew D. Penrose

The central limit theorem is perhaps the most famous result in probability theory. It is known to hold for a variety of sums of dependent random variables, but it is often not easy to get error bounds for the quality of the normal (Gaussian) approximation. We discuss some approaches to this problem in the case of geometrical problems such as coverage of a spatial region by randomly scattered disks, and for some related stochastic models.
