Montag, 06.02.2012: Surface superconductivity in the Ginzburg-Landau model

Prof. Soeren Fournais

In this talk I will review recent results on the Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity in the 3D situation. It is known that a sufficiently strong external magnetic can break the superconductivity at a well-understood critical field strength. When the magnetic field is lowered from this value, a progressively larger boundary region will carry superconductivity until, at a second critical field strength, superconductivity goes from being a 'boundary phenomenon' to being dominantly a 'bulk phenomenon'. We will describe how this physical picture translates into mathematically rigorous theorems and some of the methods behind their proofs.
