Was macht 1&1?

Donnerstag, 02.05.2024: Rigidity aspects of Penrose's singularity theorem

Dr. Eric Ling (University of Copenhagen)

In this talk, we present some rigidity aspects of Penrose's singularity theorem. Specifically, we aim to answer the following question: if a spacetime satisfies the hypotheses of Penrose's singularity theorem except with weakly trapped surfaces instead of trapped surfaces, then what can be said about the global spacetime structure if the spacetime is null geodesically complete? In this setting, we show that we obtain a foliation of MOTS which generate totally geodesic null hypersurfaces. Depending on our starting assumptions, we obtain either local or global rigidity results. We apply our arguments to cosmological spacetimes (i.e., spacetimes with compact Cauchy surfaces) and scenarios involving topological censorship. This is joint work with Greg Galloway.

Donnerstag, 02.05.2024: Emergence of classicality, Markovianity and local detailed balance in isolated quantum systems

Dr. Philipp Strasberg (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)

Many processes in nature are well described by a classical Markov process obeying local detailed balance, as evidenced, for instance, by the success of stochastic thermodynamics. Yet, how these properties emerge in an isolated quantum system is not evident. To this end, van Kampen introduced in the 1950s the repeated randomness assumption, which implies classicality, Markovianity and local detailed balance but is in blatant contradiction with unitary time evolution. However, van Kampen already speculated that this assumption is justifiable for coarse and slow observables of non-integrable many-body systems. This talk reviews recent evidence supporting this claim based on tools from pure state statistical mechanics, such as typicality, random matrix theory and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis.
