Montag, 25.11.2019: Tropical curves and top weight cohomology of M_g

Prof. Dr. Sam Payne (University of Texas)

The cohomology of the moduli space of curves is an object of central interest in algebraic geometry, topology, and mathematical physics. I will discuss one part of this cohomology that is essentially combinatorial and can be naturally identified with the homology of a tropical moduli space. One application of this approach is the recent proof, join with Chan and Galatius, that H^{4g-6}(M_g) grows exponentially with g. This growth was unexpected, and disproves conjectures of Kontsevich, and of Church, Farb, and Putman.
